Hey everyone, Kayla here. I wanted to share a weightloss update with you. About ten months ago, I decided to undergo gastric sleeve surgery in Tijuana, and it’s been a transformative experience. I’ve lost 160 pounds since then, and the changes to my daily life have been incredible.

The Benefits I’ve Experienced

Walking has become a significant part of my life now. I can comfortably walk 3-5 miles without getting winded, a stark contrast to before. It’s not just about being able to breathe easier; my muscles now tire out before my lungs do. Fitting into places I used to struggle with, like chairs and airplane seats, has become much easier, and simple things like crossing my legs have become possible and comfortable.

I’ve also noticed a significant increase in my energy levels. I feel more agile, flexible, and overall more comfortable in my own body.

The Challenges Along the Way

That being said, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. One of the drawbacks I’ve faced is hair loss, a common side effect of rapid weight loss. It’s been tough seeing my hair thin out, but it’s starting to grow back, albeit slowly. I’m considering a shorter hairstyle to manage this change better.

Mentally, it’s been a bit of a battle too. There are days when I feel I should be doing more in terms of diet and exercise. But when I look at the progress I’ve made, losing an average of 10 pounds a month, I try to remind myself that sustainable weight loss is about making good choices consistently, not perfectly.

Gratitude and Reflections

Going to Tijuana for surgery was a big step, and I don’t regret it for a second. The only thing I wish is that I hadn’t waited so long to take this step. I’m still on my journey, with about 60 pounds to go to reach my initial goal. Once there, I’ll reassess how I feel and if I want to lose more.

Stay Connected

Thank you to everyone who’s been following my journey and offering support. If you’re interested in more regular updates, check out my weekly vlogs on YouTube. If you have any questions about gastric sleeve or my experience, feel free to ask in the comments.

Here’s to the journey ahead and finding balance in our choices. Thanks for being a part of my story.

As many of you know, my health and wellness journey has always been an integral and sometimes messy part of my life. Over the years, I’ve shared my ups and downs, from losing 125 pounds on the ketogenic diet, to gaining it all back (plus some) when I became pregnant with Romulus, and learning about how PCOS, Autism, and ADHD diagnosis all have a co-morbitity with binge eating disorder. It’s been a wild ride, let me tell you!

Today, I want to open up about a life-changing decision I made recently: traveling from America to Tijuana for gastric sleeve surgery. In this blog post, I’ll share my experience, address some common questions, and hopefully, inspire others who may be considering this path. To see the full behind-the-scenes consider watching the two-part YouTube vlog series. You will find them below.

How much do you have to weigh to get gastric sleeve surgery?

Before deciding on gastric sleeve surgery, I had concerns about whether I qualified for the procedure. As a 34-year-old mother, I was committed to making a change in my life, and after thorough consultations with my healthcare team, I learned that having a BMI of 40 or higher qualified me as a candidate for gastric sleeve surgery.

The weight requirements for the surgery may vary from one healthcare provider to another, so I advise consulting with a qualified bariatric surgeon to assess your unique health situation. If you have struggled with obesity-related health issues, reaching out to a medical professional can be a crucial step towards understanding your options and choosing the best path for your health journey.

I was very thankful that even at my highest weight of 472 pounds the only health issues I had dealt with were joint pain, increased PCOS complications, and mobility issues. I also suffered from occasional high blood pressure if I was experiencing increased levels of anxiety. Still, I knew that my inability to loose weight meant that sooner or later I would be dealing with a whole host of problems and I decided not to delay this weight loss surgery any further.

How long does it take to recover from gastric sleeve surgery?

The recovery process after gastric sleeve surgery is a vital phase that requires patience and self-care. When I underwent the procedure in Tijuana, I spent two nights in the hospital, followed by one night in a recovery home which was fully staffed with nurses. The medical staff took excellent care of me. Although the initial days can be challenging, the support and guidance from the medical team made a significant difference in my recovery.

Once I was back home in America, I took it easy for the first two weeks, focusing on rest and nourishing my body with nutritious, easily digestible foods. Light walks around the house helped me regain my strength gradually. By the end of the second week, I felt much better, and my surgeon approved the slow reintroduction of regular physical activities.

It is imperative to follow your post-operative diet. It is so tempting to stray from this diet as I have been on liquids for almost four weeks but I would rather allow my stomach the appropriate time to heal to prevent complications in the future.

Every individual’s recovery timeline can vary, so it’s essential to listen to your body and follow your doctor’s instructions diligently. Remember, the recovery phase is a crucial time to nurture your body and mind, and it’s okay to lean on your support system for help and encouragement.

Is it safe to get bariatric surgery in Mexico?

The decision to undergo bariatric surgery in Tijuana, Mexico, was not an easy one, but after extensive research, I was reassured about the safety and quality of care available in certain medical facilities. I chose a reputable hospital with accreditations and positive patient reviews, ensuring that my health would be in capable hands. I went with the J. L. Prado Surgery Center, through their A Slimmer Me program.

While there are fantastic medical facilities in Mexico that adhere to international standards, it is essential to do your due diligence. Consider factors such as the surgeon’s experience, hospital certifications, and patient testimonials before making a decision. The surgery center I went through has completed over 20,000 surgeries and I have friends who went to that exact surgical center. I was able to request my doctor based on my friends experience and the reviews of those in the large private Facebook Group. You get access to this group once your application has been approved.

I also sought guidance from my primary healthcare provider, who provided valuable insights, recommendations, and who made sure I was healthy enough to have the surgery before I left the country. Being well-informed and supported throughout the process made me feel confident in my decision to embark on this transformative journey.

My experience traveling from America to Tijuana for gastric sleeve surgery has been life-changing, and I am incredibly grateful for the support I received along the way. As a mother and a Content Creator, I believe in sharing my journey to inspire others who may be considering similar paths to prioritize their health and well-being.

Remember, every step towards a healthier life is worth celebrating, and seeking professional advice is crucial when making significant decisions about your health. Whether you’re considering gastric sleeve surgery or exploring other weight loss options, remember that your well-being is a priority, and you deserve to live your best life.

As always, I’m here to support and encourage each one of you. Let’s continue to uplift and inspire each other on our journeys toward better health and happiness. Together, we can achieve greatness!

Travel is a wonderful way to explore the world, immerse oneself in different cultures, and create unforgettable memories. However, for plus-size individuals, travel can sometimes present unique challenges. In this blog post, we will discuss how plus-size people can navigate the world of travel with confidence and offer valuable tips to enhance their experiences.

How Do Plus-Size People Travel?

Traveling as a plus-size person may require some additional considerations, but it should never hinder the pursuit of wanderlust. Here are a few insights into how plus-size individuals can embark on their travel journeys:

  1. Choose Comfortable Accommodations: Look for accommodations that provide ample space and comfortable furnishings. Consider hotels with larger rooms or suites, as they offer more room to move around and relax. Additionally, opt for accommodations that provide sturdy furniture and beds to ensure a comfortable stay.
    • NOTE: Look at as many photos as possible before you book and ask your host (if you are using AirBnB) to send extra photos of places like bathrooms, stairs, and bedrooms.
  2. Research Airline Policies: Before booking flights, research the airline’s policies regarding seating, seatbelt extenders, and any additional services they offer for plus-size passengers. Some airlines may provide options like extra seat width or allow you to pre-book an extra seat at a discounted rate for added comfort during the flight.
    • NOTE: Most airlines advise you don’t bring your own seatbelt extender… but I bring my own. I found mine on Amazon for about $20. There are two kinds, one that only works on Southwest flights and the other is more universal. The universal version worked on every flight I have taken so far.
  3. Prioritize Self-Care: Long flights or hours spent exploring can take a toll on anyone’s body, so it’s important for plus-size travelers to prioritize self-care. Take regular breaks, stretch your legs, and wear comfortable clothing that allows for ease of movement. Don’t forget to stay hydrated and bring snacks that satisfy your dietary needs.
    • NOTE: Layovers should be at least 2 hours, or more. This gives you time to find and walk comfortably to your gates. I have had to practically run to gates before. Give yourself more time than you think you will need.

Plus Size Travel Tips

Traveling as a plus-size person comes with its own set of considerations. Here are some helpful tips to make your journey more enjoyable:

  1. Dress Comfortably: Opt for clothing that is both comfortable and versatile. Choose fabrics that breathe, allow for easy movement, and have stretch to accommodate your body comfortably. Layering is also helpful, as it allows you to adjust your clothing based on changing temperatures.
  2. Pack Essentials: Pack essential items such as a comfortable pair of shoes, a well-fitting swimsuit, and a travel pillow for added comfort during flights or long drives. Carry any necessary medications, as well as extra supplies to ensure you have everything you need while traveling.
  3. Research Activities and Destinations: Research the activities and destinations you plan to visit to ensure they can accommodate your needs. Look for inclusive attractions, accessible transportation options, and consider reaching out to tour operators or local guides who understand the needs of plus-size travelers.
  4. Seek Supportive Communities: Connect with online communities and forums that cater to plus-size travelers. These communities can offer valuable advice, travel recommendations, and provide a supportive network where you can share experiences and learn from others.

Travel should be accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of size. By understanding the unique considerations of plus-size travel and implementing our tips, you should feel comfortable to confidently embark on your adventures, explore new horizons, and create cherished memories along the way.

Remember, travel is about embracing new experiences and celebrating the beauty of diversity. So pack your bags, leave your worries behind, and embrace the joy of plus-size travel!
